Application and Regulations of the Vilnius International
Youth Music Competition

PREMIO SCARLATTI

The Vilnius International Youth Music Competition “Premio Scarlatti” is organised by the Public institution Musica Vitale. The event is funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture and the Vilnius City Municipality. The event's main partners are the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art in Vilnius and the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.

 

The Competition will take place from 26th to 30th October 2024 at the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art (T. Kosciuškos st. 11). The Main Prizewinners’ Concert will be held on 31st October 2024 in the Great Renaissance Hall of the National Museum Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.

 

The competition is open to classical music performers from schools, gymnasiums, conservatoires, higher education institutions of music and art, and independent performers. It is divided into sections for piano Soloists, Soloists of String Instruments, and Vocal Soloists.

 

SECTIONS. CATEGORIES. THE PROGRAMME. TRIALS

The soloist programmes must be performed by memory. Contestants are not required to fill the maximum duration for each category. Participants are divided into categories according to age.

 

I – PIANO SOLOISTS CATEGORY

Cat. Junior – up to 8 years old | maximum length 5 minutes | the execution programme is free.

Cat. A – up to 11 years old | maximum length 10 minutes | free execution programme, including works from different periods and one obligatory piece by an Italian composer.

Cat. B – up to 14 years old | maximum length 14 minutes | free execution programme, including works from different periods and one obligatory piece by an Italian composer.

Cat. C – up to 18 years old | maximum length 18 minutes | free execution programme, including works from different periods and one obligatory piece by an Italian composer.

Cat. D – up to 22 years old | maximum length 25 minutes | free execution programme, including works from different periods and one obligatory piece by an Italian composer.

Cat. E – up to 28 years old |

First Round – one virtuoso Etude and the first movement of classical Sonata

Final Round – one obligatory piece by an Italian composer and a free execution programme | maximum length 30 minutes.

* The First-round pieces can not be repeated in the Final round.

 

II – STRING INSTRUMENTS CATEGORY (violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar)

Cat. C – 13 to 15 years old included | maximum length 14 minutes | free execution programme, including works from different periods and one obligatory piece by an Italian composer.

Cat. D – 16 to 19 years old included | maximum length 20 minutes | free execution programme, including works from different periods and one obligatory piece by an Italian composer.

Cat. E – 20 to 28 years old included |

First Round – Etude or Capriccio and the first movement of Concerto.

Final Round – one obligatory piece by an Italian composer and a free execution programme | maximum length 30 minutes.

* The First-round pieces can not be repeated in the Final round.

 

III – VOCAL SOLOISTS

Cat. C – 15 to 18 years old included

a) obligatory piece by an Italian composer

b) 17th or 18th-century aria or arietta

c) free optional piece

 

Cat. D – 19 to 22 years old included

a) obligatory piece by an Italian composer

b) 17th or 18th-century aria

c) 19th to 21st-century aria

d) free optional piece

 

Cat. E – 23 up to 35 years old

First Round - it is obligatory to perform two arias by composers from different countries. 

Final Round – a) obligatory piece by an Italian composer

b) 17th or 18th-century aria

c) 19th to 21st-century aria

* All the programs must be performed in the original language, by memory, in original tonalities, and all arias are performed with their original recitatives and cabalettas. The First-round arias can not be repeated in the Final round.

 

APPLICATIONS

Online Application Form must be submitted before 6th October 2024.

APPLICATIONS MUST CONSIST OF:

  • a detailed profile of the participant;

  • the proof of payment;

  • a copy of a passport or ID card;

The programme submitted in the application form cannot be changed. Participation in the competition confirms acceptance of the Competition’s regulations.

 

PARTICIPATION FEES

Entrants to the Competition must pay a participation fee:

  • Categories Juniors, A and B soloists: 60 Euros;

  • Categorie C, D, E soloists: 80 Euros.

In the payment order, please indicate the name and surname of the participant and “VII Vilnius Premio Scarlatti”.

All money transfer fees must be paid by the entrant. The participation fee is not refundable.

ACCOMPANIST SERVICES

If needed, the organizing committee will provide professional accompanists for the participants. Rehearsal in the class (up to 45 min), acoustic rehearsal and performance on the stage will cost 100 Eur, and additional rehearsal (up to 45 min) - 50 Eur.

The services of the concertmaster are not included in the application fee and should be covered by the competitors individually. Participants must indicate their preference for a concertmaster on the application form.

 

SCORES, PRIZE-GIVING CONCERTS

The absolute winner, GRAND PRIX, in each category, is awarded to the competitor with the highest score, no less than 98/100.

First Prizes - 95/100.

Second Prizes - 90/100.

Third Prizes - 85/100.

Merit Diplomas - 80/100.

Absolute winners must play for no fee at the Final Concert; if they do not comply, they will lose their prize.

The Absolute First Prize GRAND PRIX is indivisible. Each prize will be deducted at the source (tax, fees).

All competitors and their teachers will receive a Participation Diploma.

JURY

Contestants will be evaluated by an international jury, which will consist of renowned Lithuanian and foreign professors, performers, and artistic directors of international music competitions and festivals.

The decision of the jury is final and cannot be appealed. Members of the jury cannot assess their students; they must inform other members of the jury of the matter in written form. Consultations during the Competition are forbidden.

 

Competitors may not make any economic claim on audio or video recordings made during the Competition and the Final Concert. These recordings will be the exclusive property of the Musica Vitale association for any use. During the Competition, nobody may make video or tape recordings or take photographs without the authorisation of Musica Vitale.

 

All auditions are open to the public. Contestants will be called to the auditions in an order decided by the organisers. The competition timetable will be announced as soon as possible. The organisers reserve the right to decide on the participation of candidates in the 7th Vilnius International Youth Music Competition “Premio Scarlatti”. The organisers reserve the right to change the Competition's regulations and assess participation and will provide information about any changes to all competitors. In the event of any dispute, the Lithuanian text takes precedence.
